Pajama Party Ideas for Grown-Ups and Kids (Plus What to Put on the Invitation)

I made the Christmas Pajama Party Kit as a cozy PJ party set for kids, with a sign for the cocoa bar. These are the ideas and invitation details I'd plan around.

Pick one simple theme, plan one main activity and food people can graze on, and put the practical details on the invitation: the start and end or pickup time, what to bring and any food allergies. For a grown-up or holiday version, a matching pajama dress code and a good movie or game do most of the work.

Pick your version

A grown-up night. Not overnight. Think cozy dress code, drinks, snacks and a movie or a game. It's an easy alternative to a dressier holiday party.

A family holiday party. Kids and parents together, early evening, everyone in pajamas. It wraps up before bedtime.

A kids' sleepover. Overnight, usually drop-off. You'll need a clear pickup time and a parent contact for every guest.

Holiday pajama party ideas

  • Ask everyone to wear matching or holiday pajamas, then take one group photo early, before anyone changes.
  • Set up a cocoa station with marshmallows, crushed candy canes and whipped cream.
  • Pick one holiday movie ahead of time so nobody spends 40 minutes scrolling.
  • Hold a pajama contest with silly categories, like most festive or most likely to fall asleep first.
  • Decorate cookies at the table while the movie's on.

Food that doesn't need a sit-down meal

Keep it to things people can eat on the couch. Pizza, a snack board, popcorn and cookies cover most crowds. For an evening party, have the real food out in the first hour and the sweets later. If it's an overnight, plan an easy breakfast, like pancakes or a tray of muffins, and tell parents on the invitation whether breakfast is included.

Games that work in pajamas

Pajama charades. Act out holiday movies or songs. No setup, and it works for any age.

Flashlight hunt. Hide small treats or paper stars around a dark room and send kids in with flashlights.

Pillowcase relay. Kids hop down the hallway in a pillowcase and tag the next player. Clear the furniture first.

What to put on the invitation

Parents will look for these details first. Include:

  • The date
  • Arrival time, and the end or pickup time (both days if it's overnight)
  • The address
  • What to bring, like a sleeping bag, pillow or pajamas
  • A request to share food allergies
  • The host's phone number
  • Who to RSVP to, and by when

Sample wording for grown-ups (the names and number are made up):
